Wail of a Thousand Voices
Trapdoor Spider (large vermin)
The party “discovered” a Trapdoor Spider north of the Old Sycamore, and marked its lair down on their map, as well as marking the ground in front of the burrow with fire.
Trapdoor spiders have impressive, scimitar-like mandibles – if they successfully attack a target they automatically latch on, piercing the victim, grappling them and immediately dragging them into their burrow. The spider possesses both tremorsense and lays out a fine webbing outside the burrow that is hard to spot – if the spider judges from the vibrations on the nets and the ground that a creature trespassed into range, it emerges from the hole, surprising its prey and hopefully latching onto it immediately. The encountered spider had its burrow set up in a way that it automatically closed if the spider retreats, sealing both it and its poor victim for easy consumption. The spider possesses a poison that is used both to kill or immobilize prey and to digest the insides of a victim. Confronted with multiple adversaries and a prey item that actually managed to escape its grasp, the spider retreated into its burrow and actually held the opening shut until the danger passed.
